6-tonne scanner removed in early hours

To ensure safe removal, a 6-tonne GE MRI scanner was removed from the imaging department at Crosshouse Hospital, Kilmarnock during the small hours.

To avoid putting staff, patients or visitors in any danger, and to enable a quicker removal, de-installation specialists Devon Medical removed the scanner out of hours.

To cover the distance required, a large crane with a span of 84 metres was used. The crane was constructed around 9pm and the magnet was lifted out at 3am while the area was vacated to ensure nobody was using the buildings below.

The scanner was then lifted over the buildings to the waiting haulage truck on which it was safely loaded. James Laurie, Lead Engineer for Devon Medical explained “The smaller items of equipment were safely dismantled during the day leaving the main scanner to be removed out of hours.  This ensured that staff and patients were in no danger and it caused them no disruption during their normal working day”.

John Amoore, Head of Department of Medical Physics said “The various groups and teams pulled together to safely lift out the MRI magnet without incident.  The success was due to competent team work.”
